Substance dualism, also referred to as Cartesian Dualism, is Descartes’s position in the philosophy of mind (metaphysics). It claims that human beings are made of two main substances, the mind and the body and that these substances exist separately from each other. 2011-07-22 · My question is about Descartes’ dualism, MindBody Problem, I don’t quite understand it; I don’t get how he came to the conclusion that mind and body are two different substance. I’m hoping that you would be able to explain it to me please. Thank you! Answer by Jürgen Lawrenz.

Since the immaterial substance (mind is immaterial) not extended in space as the body is, the mind is not in contact with the body. Advocates of dualism, like Descartes, run into trouble on how to explain how the mental states and physical world interact and communicate. They are unable to provide enough examples as to how the mind interacts with the body to create movement, or having to force oneself to stay awake even though the body is beginning to fall asleep. Dualism is based on two substances, which are mind and matter. Descartes explained that these two does not necessarily need one another to exist. In Descartes’ Dualism, the body is considered to be a material substance, and the mind is considered to be an immaterial one.

The difficulty, however, is not merely that mind and body are different. It is that they are different in such a way that their interaction is impossible because it involves a contradiction.

Each substance has its own There is a very common view which states that the French philosopher René Descartes discovered, or invented, this problem in the 17th century. According to Descartes, matter is essentially spatial, and it has the characteristic properties of linear dimensionality. Dualism does not explain how a mind, which Descartes believes to be non – physical affects the functions of the body. Due to the advances in science, we know that the functions that the body does is controlled by the brain. Therefore the brain must have something to do with the mind, as that is the only way the body is controlled.… Descartes proves his own existence as a mind or thinking thing (res cogitans) in Meditation II. He proves the existence of his body in his wider proof of material things by the end of Meditation VI. The essential principle of Cartesian dualism is that mind and body are not identical but quite distinct, separate substances. Descartes’ dualistic view of mind and body is that they are two separate entities in which the mind is immaterial and the body being material. Descartes supports this by assuming,”If we can conceive of one thing without the other, then those two things are different” (90).
